Malabika Bora - Assamese SingerBorn in a well-to-do family in Golaghat in upper Assam, Malabika showed early signs of her talent in music as much as in sports. During her school days, she concentrated more on sporting events and earned the distinction of representing the state of Assam in table tennis at national level tournaments. Singing and dancing were just hobbies then but the acclaim she received for her vocal recitals in many a social gatherings, encouraged her to take up singing as a rewarding art.

Malabika started serious training in classical music in her early teens at ‘Ajanta Kala Mandal’ in Golaghat under the able guidance of her Guru Suren Roy. Later she was trained by classical music maestro Guru Hiren Sarma who provided her with invaluable insights in the realm of classical and contemporary music. While in college, she started singing on All India Radio and made her mark as a singer by the time she graduated from Dibrugarh University in the Arts stream.
Malabika’s first break as a play back singer in Assamese movies came in the year 1977 in the feature film ‘Faguni’ with Dr. Upen Kakoti as its music director. This was followed by a series of movies spanning over many years that include such award winning movies as ‘Pratham Ragini’, ‘Devi’ and ‘Hiya Diya Niya’ and runaway hits like ‘Bowari’, ‘Ghar Sansar’, ‘Maa’, ‘Devata’ and ‘Pratima’.Other notable movies include ‘Sewali’, ‘Pratisodh’, ‘I killed him Sir’, ‘Arpan’, ‘Premgeet’, ‘Mamata’, ‘Satyam Shivam Sundaram’, ‘Tukura Sorair Baah’ and the feature film ‘Ahir Bhairab’ presently under production.

Malabika has worked extensively with most established music directors of Assam and has a large number of audio-cassettes to her credit. She has performed on stage with eminent personalities like Dr. Bhupen Hazarika and Late Jayanta Hazarika and also recorded Assamese songs for audio-cassettes with Kumar Sanu and Udit Narayan -two famous artists of Mumbai. Besides being a regular performing artist of All India Radio and the national TV channel Doordarshan, she has sung Hindi songs for Delhi Doordarshan’s Central Production Centre.

When away from the demanding work schedule of the entertainment industry, Malabika likes to spend time quietly with her family and close friends. Her husband works as the Head of Human Resources in Numaligarh Refinery Limited a Government of India Enterprise. Her daughter is presently pursuing a course in Fashion Technology in Assam Textile Institute.
